Hair is one of the most beautiful gifts to mankind. It has been adored and admired by the people for long. Amidst the people looking for hair related cures like cure for hair loss, dandruff cure or baldness treatment, there are some who are worried because of excessive growth of hair at unwanted places. However, at times it grows at places where it is generally not found. Dermatology terms such outgrowth of hair as Hirsutism; meaning shaggy or hairy.

In some races this is common condition and not taken seriously. While in most of the races overgrowth of hair in a woman at unwanted places is certainly a problem. This problem happens because of androgens. Androgens are male hormones. Women also have androgens. Sometimes a woman produces more of androgens resulting in overgrowth of hair in the male pattern. Sometimes a woman may be very sensitive to even the common accepted levels of androgens and that may cause hirsutism. Some anabolic steroids cause hirsutism and so do some hormone pills.

The other method that can be used by your doctor is prescribing anti-androgens. Remember that taking anti-androgens during pregnancy can harm a male fetus. Please inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. These medications may include oral contraceptives, cyproterone and spironolactone. Your doctor will tell you about the dosage and side effects you may expect.

The excessive hairiness in children and women may be caused by pituitary or adrenal glands disorders. In addition, women may develop excessive hairiness after menopause. Anabolic steroids or corticosteroids, and certain medications, also may cause excessive hairiness. Causes of hirsuitism include Cushing's syndrome, adrenal tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and some ovarian tumors.

There are several treatments available. One of the main causes of Hirsutism, is the release of excessive male hormones due to being overweight. If you are overweight consult your doctor, who will be able to advise on a suitable diet plan and exercise regime. As the weight drops off and fitness increases, hormone levels can drop which often results in a reduction in the problem.

Another solution is to shave the affected areas. This will give you at best a temporary solution as the area will need to be shaved regularly to avoid stubble showing.

Medical treatment for hirsutism is selected based on the underlying cause. Drugs (anti-androgens) are often administered simultaneously while cosmetic hair-removal techniques are performed. It is important to note that these drugs, if required, must be taken continuously, because if discontinued, androgen levels will revert back to their original levels, resulting in re-growth of unwanted hair.

Hair-removal therapies include epilation, waxing and shaving. More permanent hair removal may be achieved by electrolysis and laser therapy which disable or destroy the hair follicles, and in so doing, prevent regrowth of hair.
